New hobbies to try that will inspire you

[read_meter]

The new year isn’t just a great time to knock off all your goals but also try all those new hobbies you’ve been dying to get into.

With over 100+ ventures you can begin to explore, I’ve narrowed it down to a list of 30 for you to choose from.

From hobbies for all the crafty DIY ladies out there to tech-friendly hobbies for the nerds.

Hobbies are great because not only can they simply be a form of expression and digging into a pastime that you enjoy, but they can also provide one with an avenue to profit from their interests.

Tech-Friendly

Blogging

If you’re anything like me and have an immense love for writing and graphic design, blogging is an awesome hobby that provides an outlet to get back in touch with both of those skills.

Along my blogging journey, I’ve learned a great deal about website design, copywriting, how search engines such as Google work, and so much more.

Blogging can be as easy or hard as you choose to make it, depending on if you’re looking to turn your website into a profitable business or simply a casual way to express your personal stories and/or opinions but if you find joy in producing written content and providing value to others based on a skill or interest, then blogging just might be a great new hobby for you!

Content Creation

If you’re a part of the online social media space then you’re probably well aware of the boom of Content Creation over the past few years.

From short-form TikTok videos, long-form YouTube videos, Instagram reels, and blog posts such as the one you’re currently reading, there’s a plethora of platforms and types of media one can produce content for.

And, similar to blogging, there are so many niches that one can create content around.

Some of my favorite content creators include people such as blogger Sophia Lee, influencer Monique Smith, and podcast host Les of Balanced Black Girl.

All of these people create such different forms of media in their unique way that are not only entertaining but also inspiring, and educational.

Digital Illustration

Now, nobody said you have to have some crazy artistic skills to try digital illustration but if you’re into graphic designing, it could be a fun new hobby to try and improve those art skills you might have not known you even possessed!

Procreate has a wide range of “brushes”, pencils, markers to select from, and even some animation capabilities. But, I would say it’s not the best app for beginners and is a bit on the pricey side when you are just experimenting.

Fashionista-Friendly

Thrifting and Upcycling

Thrifting and upcycling is a great way to shop ethically and find pieces to add to your closet that match your style as well as turn those preloved items into something new and make it completely your own.

Whether you want to bedazzle a vintage bag you found or cut up a pair of old mom jeans into a cute pair of oversized shorts, the upcycling and thrifting possibilities are endless.

Custom Printing

Embrace your inner fashion designer and start a hobby of custom design printing.

Customize t-shirts that you already own and add a personal flare to them with something like your favorite band’s logo, or create your custom-printed sweatpants with your alma mater’s name on the side.

Jewelry Making

Every fashion-forward gal’ knows that more often than not, the jewelry that you choose to wear can make an entire outfit. From simple and semi-drab to absolutely fab.

I love jewelry making because it’s one of those hobbies that you can easily turn into a side hustle if you find that it’s your passion. Jewelry making can also be as cheap of a hobby or expensive as a hobby as you’d like it to be.

Visit your nearby craft store and pick up a couple of charms and chains to get you started or get even more creative and have your hobby be more resourceful by making jewelry pieces from recycled items you have around you.

Not only does it make for a good solo hobby but jewelery making can also make for a great girls’ night activity. Gather up all of your necessary supplies and have some of your friends get in on all of the fun too!

DIY-Friendly

Crocheting

I’ll be so honest, I used to think crotcheting was a lame hobby. It always just reminded me of the activity of an old lady…until I was scrolling on YouTube one day and came across a DIY video for the most trendy crochet bag.

Beginner Tote Bag Crochet Tutorial – Crochet Pink Pumpkin

I mean, this was a bag I would love to own and would even purchase from an Etsy store if I ever saw one! I’d be completely lying if I said it hadn’t somewhat inspired me to write this blog post. But, it also really opened my eyes to truly how much you can create when crocheting.

Tote bags, beanies, scarves, blankets, stuffed mini figures…shall I go on?

Scrapbooking

Scrapbooking can become the perfect hobby for all my craft girlies who enjoy collectibles and souvenirs.

Whether you’re into travel and want to make a scrapbook about your summer trip to Disney World or are into doing marathons and want to make a scrapbook on every race you’ve competed in.

What makes scrapbooking even better is that you can keep all of your special moments in one place to look back on and personalize and design to your very own liking.

If you’re already a candle connoisseur, what better way to tap into your creative side than to pick up a hobby of candlemaking?

    Pilates

Pilates is totally on my bucket list of hobbies to try in 2024!

It’s a great mode of exercise for those who are dying to tone and strengthen their muscles, especially those of the lower back, abdominal muscles, hips, and glutes. If you are like me and want to emulate that bangin’ Lori Harvey body and become the workout girl you’ve always dreamt of being, consider signing yourself or a group of friends up for an exciting Pilates class.

With the help of my trusted friend, YouTube University, I found a couple of at-home, no equipment needed, beginner-friendly, Pilates workouts that you can do in the comfort of your own home as well.

    Yoga

Yoga is an old practice of spiritual development that practices the body and mind to reach a higher sense of consciousness, calmness, and awareness.

I enjoy Yoga as a hobby because it allows me to escape the world in a peaceful and silent environment, connect with my real inner thoughts and feelings, and clear my mind of the negative.

Like Pilates, if you are a beginner you can always find quick and simple guided Yoga exercises on YouTube. But, don’t be shy to find some classes in your area either!

Get out there and you just may find some friends who enjoy your new hobby just as much as you do!

    “Hot Girl” Walks

You’ve got to be living under a rock if you’ve never once heard of the infamous “Hot Girl” Walk. Essentially, it’s a slang term that first originated on TikTok by Creator, Mia Lind, who first started posting her walks under the hashtag #HotGirlWalk and gained over 641 million views.

The HGW, for short, was created as a way to encourage the girlies to get up and get some exercise through a daily stroll.

The workout is a four-mile walk centered around mindfulness.

While you’re out on your stroll, take the time to think of things for which you’re grateful, your goals and aspirations, and of course, how you’re going to achieve them.

Oh, and don’t forget the last important step. How hot you are!

    Reading

I think we can all agree that reading was a snooze fest back in school when we had assigned reading materials.

As I got older I hated the fact that I fell off with reading so much and it became less enjoyable over time.

Recently I’ve started listening to audiobooks as a way to tap into my inner wanna-be bookworm era and it’s become my new thing!

With technology having advanced as much as it has these days, nothing beats the luxury of being able to go out on a Hot Girl Walk and stream Atomic Habits by James Clear (Such a great read by the way! 10/10 recommend!) at the same time without even having to pick up a physical copy of the book.

Reading is a fantastic hobby to explore when you’re looking to either open your mind and escape to a fantasy world or educate yourself on a subject you’ve been longing to know more about.

Of course, there are lots of ways to stream audiobooks but my favorite platform that I have been using is Spotify. With the Spotify premium plan, you’re able to choose from a wide variety of genres and authors that are available to you at no extra cost and even save them in your library for offline streaming.

    Journaling

Writing in my journal more often is on my bucket list for 2024 as a hobby that I’d like to pick up and practice more of. Journaling is proven to help relieve stress, track progress and growth, and gain self-confidence.

One thing that I learned while practicing journaling the last couple weeks of this year has been to not set too high of expectations for what to write about. Just write whatever comes to your heart!

Whether you want to use journaling as a way to manifest your goals and ambitions, as a way to relieve stress and jot down your feelings, or as a way of showing gratitude for the things that you own, the people you know, or the experiences you may have, know there is no wrong way to the journaling process.

    Cooking

I recently picked up cooking as a hobby over the last couple of months and might I say, so, much, fun! An underrated hobby in my opinion. We can all get so caught up in the fast and convenient drive-thru Chipotlanes and instant meals from the grocery store but nothing beats a meal that you cooked from fresh ingredients at home.

Although cooking can be a time-consuming hobby depending on your day-to-day schedule, there are lots of options that have become popular and make it easy for at-home meals to be made.

You can easily choose from hundreds of recipes to try and even ones that fit your and your family’s specific diets.

Even if it’s just finding a couple of recipes that you like, give it a whirl and try to make a meal from scratch a couple of days out of the week. You just might find you enjoy it.

    Gardening

I haven’t always had the best track record for being a plant nanny but if you’re anything like me and still enjoy plants nonetheless, this year is a better time than ever to improve on those skills.

Gardening is a great hobby because you can practice it year-round. Between an indoor Monstera Swiss or an outdoor Owari Satsuma mandarin tree, there’s always a plant for everyone. Aka, those who remember to water and tend to a plant’s soil and those who may be a bit more…inattentive.

Even if the whole gardening process isn’t for you, you can always consider collecting faux plants too! Nearly Natural and Afloral are two online plant stores that have the most beautiful collections for you to choose from.

    Hiking

Take your Hot Girl Walk to the next level and explore your local park ranges by hiking.

Hiking is another thrilling hobby to delve into because it can be a year-round activity for you to try with friends, family, and hiking groups.

Whether you want to hike up the mountains of Colorado or explore the New England outdoors of Connecticut, just remember to always dress weather appropriately!

    Stargazing

Stargazing is a hobby that I would consider super out of the box and unique but extremely fun nonetheless once you get the hang of it. It makes for a great opportunity to learn more about the solar system and all of it’s constellations.

All you really need to get started is a pair of eyes, maybe a book on stargazing or a stargazing guide app, and a clear outdoor space to gaze. I’ve linked a stargazing app that you can check out to begin your gazing journey!

Embrace the new year with enthusiasm and curiosity as you explore these practical and budget-friendly hobbies.
